International Women’s Day 2018 in London

Right across London on Thursday March 8th, there are activities and events planned to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

International Women’s Day is in fact a worldwide event, but nowhere is it celebrated with more pride than in London.

It’s believed the origins of the IWD lie in the 1908 protest walk by 15,000 women in New York City. They were demanding the right to vote, receive better pay and have shorter working hours. This became an annual occurrence and in 1910 led to a German woman called Clara Zetkin calling for an International Women’s Day.

In 1913, the event was assigned the permanent date of 8th March. Then in 2011, former US President Barack Obama took the idea another step forward. He declared March as Women’s History Month.

There are probably never been a more poignant milestone year from the Women’s rights movement in the UK than 2018.  This is partly because it marks the 100-year anniversary of the date British women won the right to vote.

This year’s International Women’s Day is also even more powerful due to recent events. There have been many headlines regarding the obstacles that women face to forge careers in some industries, including sexual harassment. This has led to the birth of the #MeToo movement, highlighting inequalities and abuse in the film, fashion, music, politics and art industries.

What to expect in London

At the time of going to press, there had already been marches and activities in London to mark the 100-year anniversary of the suffragette success and to highlight the #MeToo campaign.

To get information on what else is going on in London to mark International Women’s Day, use the hashtag #PressForProgress on social media.  Another way to learn more about this important day is at #IWD2018.

Highlights of a packed week include the Women of the World Festival, at the Southbank Centre, from Friday March 9th to Sunday March 11th.

You could mingle with authors, broadcasters and campaigners at the International Women’s Day Breakfast Morning at the WeWork Waterhouse Square, Holborn. That’s on Thursday March 8th starting at 8am and free of charge.
